I don’t know about you, but there’s nothing I love more than getting a good deal on something! The feeling is made even sweeter (or more adrenaline-spiked–however, you want to look at it!) when you are shopping for something specific and you find it for a fraction of the original cost.
That’s what happened to me recently when I was looking for a new desk and desk chair. We just moved across several states, and our new house has wayyy more space than I’m accustomed to. I actually have space for my own desk!! So I set about looking for one.
I knew I didn’t want to buy a brand new desk unless I simply couldn’t find anything at yard sales or used stores like Goodwill and the Salvation Army. I made several stops at yard sales, Goodwill and the Salvation Army and found nothing I liked.
Goodwill and the Salvation Army had plenty of beat-up desks that were selling for anywhere from $30-$80. I just wasn’t satisfied.
The waiting and looking finally paid off when my husband and I were headed somewhere on a Saturday (prime yard sale day!!) and we saw a yard sale. We stopped, and there was a wooden desk that was the PERFECT size for me!! All it needed was a quick clean.
The price of $10 nearly blew me away. I had to hide my excitement because you never want the price to go up, you know. I couldn’t believe my luck! I had not found anything this nice at Goodwill or the Salvation Army for less than $40!
Here it is in all it’s beauty:
Look at the beautiful shine on that wood!! Just lovely!
Now all I had to do was find a chair to go with it. Well, that took a few more weeks of waiting, but we stumbled across yet another yard sale where I found a small wooden folding chair that was small enough to fit into the small leg area of my new desk.
When we stumbled across the yard sale with the chair, we were actually on our way to Ikea for something else. I picked up the chair for $2, only to find the exact chair at Ikea selling for $18.
Here’s my bargain desk and chair together:
Let me break down my savings from my yard sale finds:
$10 for a desk that could have gone for $30 and above, or have cost $80 and above for a brand new desk (I’m not a fan of the modern desk styles and cheap materials anyways.)
$2 for a $18 Ikea chair
That comes to a savings of $20-60+ on the desk, and $16 on the chair, or $36-$76 TOTAL.
I’m pleased as punch, tickled pink, you name it… I’m so happy to have found a desk and chair that I love AND get to have saved so much money on it!
Do YOU love yard sale shopping??
