I seem to be having some odd reflective observations about my new house lately. First, I got the idea that my new home’s layout was increasing my productivity–and it is!! Now, I think my sink is changing my habits as well.
Single-Bowl vs. Double-Bowl
Until now, I have NEVER lived in a place that did not have a double-bowl sink in the kitchen. With a double-bowl sink, you can wash dishes in one bowl, and rinse them in another.
You can also be lazy, like me, and use one bowl for soaking dishes and/or leave them there until you feel like getting to them. In the meantime, you can use the free side as your functioning, accessible side.
Welllll…..no such luck with a single-bowl sink. Yes, I have a farmhouse sink, meaning it is quite large and deep, but there is no separation allowing me to soak in one side while I continue to use the other side.
This makes it quite difficult, and annoying, to leave dishes past the meal in which they were used. It makes it quite difficult and annoying to try to prepare the next meal with last meal’s dishes sitting in the sink. (Can you tell how much this bothers me?!)
This proves quite problematic for someone like me who gets annoyed at such things. (Please tell me I’m not the only one!!)
Change in Habits
Cue a change in habits. What’s a girl to do when faced with a challenge like this? I can’t keep on being annoyed by my dishes in the sink getting in the way. That’s no way to live.
I have since been forced to start cleaning up immediately after each meal, loading the dishwasher, and immediately washing the dishes that are not dishwasher safe. It’s literally the only way to avoid being annoyed and overwhelmed when it is time to start preparing the next meal.
I know this is a habit that I should have developed a long time ago. I understand that, but as we all know life gets in the way, and no one wants to miss life because they are cleaning up after a meal. Can I get an “amen”?!
But now I do my best to clean up the WHOLE kitchen as I go through making each meal. That way I have less to clean up AFTER the meal, meaning I can keep my sink clear and myself UN-annoyed.
Maybe I should be grateful for my new sink changing my habits and teaching me to be cleaner in the kitchen…
